The question has crossed our minds multiple times. Maybe while standing in line you glance over at the dude outfitted in neon colors standing next to you. Why are his skis twice the width of yours? What are the benefits of a wide ski? Well, if you opt to follow this guy on a deep powder day you’ll quickly learn why. A ski that is wider underfoot will glide on top of soft fluffy snow much better than a ski narrow underfoot. The ideal ski for a powder day is slightly stiffer with an underfoot dimension of at least 80 mm. You’ll charge through snow effortlessly and smoothly even if it’s choppy or heavy. A wider ski also guarantees an increase in face shots! If you’re not sure you want to drop the money for a wide ski just yet, I recommend demo-ing a powder ski like the Volkl Mantra from the best Park City Ski Shop.
